YOU are the magic of the holiday season

So much of my festive vibe this year arises from the joy I experience in realizing this is a season where I can freely indulge in rituals that transcend the present.

Christmas, winter equinox, Saturnalia — the ending of the Julian calendar offers space for us to unwind and relax a bit.

I love having a fresh Christmas tree to decorate. The lights! I simply adore all of the lights during this dark season.

The red and green poinsettias are always so rich looking and festive.

Fir garlands, pinecones, cinnamon, and all the scents of a winter wonderland being brought indoors stirs something within me.

It is a time to celebrate the fertility of the earth. To enjoy life, and the persistent essence of nature, even as growth slows down and plants die.

All of this to say — the holidays can be a stressful, expensive time. And here in NYC where I live, this also means an influx of crowds damn near everywhere. I find the most Christmas joy when I’m at home, in the space that I’ve cultivated, which includes love, warmth, fresh flowers, good food, and flavorful libations.

I have created my OWN Christmas magic, because I willed it so.

All photography is my own.
